I'm lookin' for some music software (PC-type) -- something that acts as a multitrack recorder, at the very least. I've used Cakewalk products before (an older version of Home Studio, especially), but frankly I don't like their stuff. Too tuff.
I'm leaning toward Ableton. Heavily. It's mighty nice (at least the demo is). Anyway, I wonder if some of my friends who record music on their computers have anything to add?

Well, I got by with Anvil Studio (http://www.anvilstudio.com/) for a couple years....primarily because it's free! Today, though, I have an MBox and Protools LE. It seems good enough. I haven't quite figured it out yet (can't get midi working...but I don't really need it either).
I've used Logic and It seemed easier to understand than Protools. But, that's Mac-only, right? I haven't used Cakewalk or Ableton.
I guess I'm not much help! I am going to download the Ableton demo, though, and see what all the hoopla is about.
Ultimately, as I discovered, Ableton is the only sequencer software Rachel can get with her work discount, so that pretty much settled it.
I did think the demo was kick-ass, though.
And protools is way too tough for me. No demo that I could find, either. More power to you, though! It looks like the new protools comes with a scaled down version of ableton. Interesting.
I like audacity pretty well ( audacity on sourceforge ). I know it works well on OSX. Might work on your machine too (particularly if you install Linux).
protools is, of course, the thing *and* you can find a free demo at the protools free page. the learning curve is steepish, but this is the black magic that makes britney not sound like chain smoking trailer trash (which would be preferable).
Ooh -- thanks kebbers! Those were good links. Unfortunately, protools free says it's only for windows 98/ME. That's like archaeology, man (i.e., diggin' up old shit). If I get uppity, I might try it anyway!
I'm impressed that both you and Chris are into protools. You cats rock it.
